Summary
New Math, or modern mathematics education, attempted to reform mathematics
teaching in primary and secondary schools in many countries across the world.
In this paper, we study the motives of the reformers in Western Europe from
the perspective of the ideas behind the moral commitment of mathematicians
to participate in the movement and their conviction that mathematics could
improve the quality of life. The main topics that were reflected upon by all the
mathematicians participating in the reforms include mathematical thinking, goals
of education and how to achieve and measure them, and new teacher training.
In concluding remarks, we discuss why later most mathematicians abandoned
the reforms.

V tomto příspěvku studujeme motivy reformátorů v západní Evropě, a to

How mathematics confronts its paradoxes
Ladislav Kvasz
Abstract.
Paradoxes in mathematics show surprisingly many common features. The paper analyzes the historical development of the language of the particular mathematical theory (i.e., algebra, calculus, and predicate logic, respectively) and argues that the paradoxes occur at a particular phase of the historical development of the language. It argues that the paradoxes exhibit the expressive boundaries of the language of mathematics.

Summary
Paradoxes in mathematics such as the casus irreducibilis [Cardano 1545], the
paradoxes of the calculus [Berkeley 1734] or Russell’s paradox [Russell 1903]
show surprisingly many common features. It is possible to see these paradoxes
as linguistic phenomena occurring at a specific stage in the development of the
particular theory. It seems that even though each paradox taken in isolation is
well understood, the paradoxes as a general phenomenon still lack sufficient
historical analysis. The paper analyzes the historical development of the language
of the particular mathematical theory (i.e., algebra, calculus, and predicate logic,
respectively) and argues that the paradoxes occur at a particular phase of the
historical development of the language; it characterizes that stage as the stage
when in the language we begin to construct representations of representations.
It argues that the paradoxes exhibit the expressive boundaries of the language
of mathematics as introduced in [Kvasz 2008]. That is why these paradoxes
exhibit several common features–they correspond to the same epistemological
phenomenon, namely expressive boundaries of language.
v [Kvasz 2008]. Proto paradoxy vykazují společné rysy – korespondují s týmž
epistemologickým fenoménem, především s expresivními hranicemi jazyka.

Nymburk lan. Several notes on the units of modern period
Michal Plavec
Abstract.
In this paper, we study the differences between Prague and Bohemia cubit and differences between lan of Wenceslaus Hájek of Libočany and lan of the Nymburk Revenue Registry of 1542. An edition from Nymburk Revenue Registry of 1542 and Bohemian Chronicle by Wenceslaus Hájek of Libočany is appended.
Studii doprovází edice nymburského důchodního registra z roku 1542 a pasáže z Kronyky české Václava Hájka z Libočan.

Summary
Until the half of 18th century, there was no unified system of units of length,
weight and volume. In this paper, author studies the differences between Prague
and Bohemian cubit, differences between lan of Wenceslaus Hájek of Libočany
and lan of the Nymburk Revenue Registry of 1542. He studies differences among
standards (étalons) and discusses the possibility of basing the conversions on
the size of barleycorns. Finally, he shows that in 16th century the computations
of land areas were based on rectangles, not squares. An edition from Nymburk
Revenue Registry of 1542 and Bohemian Chronicle by Wenceslaus Hájek of
Libočan is appended.
Resumé
Až do doby vlády Marie Terezie nebyly zavedeny jednotné délkové, váhové a objemové
jednotky.
důchodního registra z roku 1542 a pasáže z Kronyky české Václava Hájka
z Libočan.
